SAN MARTIN DE
LOS ANDES & JUNIN DE LOS ANDES
These two towns
are only 30 miles away from one another, and
share a local airport (Chapelco- Airport
Code: CPC) situated in between the two
towns, thus offering convenient access right
into the most renowned fly fishing domain in
Argentine Patagonia. However, Bariloche does
offer more frequencies and sometimes easier
access from most South American cities, and
could be a better gateway choice for the
international traveller. In-Out
transportation from either gateway will be
properly arranged.
San martin de los Andes is a classy,
mountain town located at the shore of Lake
Lacar. It offers a wide choice of
accommodations, international cuisine, and
even a Casino.
Junin de los Andes is a smaller, quaint
village located at shores of Chimehuin
River, and at the crossroads of several
other rivers. World famous Chimehuin River
flows out of the Huechulafquen Basin,
forming the “Boca del Chimehuin” a specially
protected fly fishing zone. Some 20 miles
downstream, it bathes the Junin de los Andes
town, located right by its banks. Further
downstream, it winds its way through the
Patagonian steppe valleys for some 20 more
miles before flowing into the Alumine River. |

Not
surprisingly, Junín de los Andes, has been
dubbed the Trout Fly-Fishing Mecca of
Argentine Patagonia - officially it has been
declared “Capital Nacional de la Trucha” by
the Argentine Government. Nearby Chimehuin
River, Malleo River, Aluminé River and
Collon Cura River are suitable for both
traditional wading and floating outings.
These Classic Patagonian Rivers are fed out
of Andes valley lakes such as Lacar, Lolog,
Huechulafquen, Tromen, Quillen and Alumine
basins and flow into the wild, open
Patagonian steppes. They flow in winding,
gentle valleys, so they are easy to wade and
float (grade 1 rafting). All rivers have
several access points throughout their
courses, either for wading or floating. Both
modalities are available to you.. |
